This will be the most daring skirt trend of 2024

Jul 22, 2023

If there is one trend that has made its mark on 2023's fashion scene, it's the transparent trend. By the looks of things, it will continue to gain momentum in 2024, yet this time in the form of a skirt that borrows the codes of the slip skirt (the bottom half of the iconic slip dress from the 1990s).

The little black dress is making way for its sheer counterpart.

From the runway to the red carpet and the streets of Paris, transparent fabrics have officially taken over. While we have always gotten used to covering the most intimate parts of our bodies, this trend, born on the catwalks of Spring/Summer 2023 - is almost a feminist statement as it is a way for women to assert themselves. The stars have been quick to fly the flag for the trend, whether it be Kate Moss seen in the streets of New York wearing a transparent dress by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, Bella Hadid spotted in a fully sheer dress just last month, or the supermodel Cindy Crawford who walked the runway in an opaque Versace dress for Vogue World in London.

Whatever your age, size, or body shape, this trend is remarkable because it is synonymous with women taking back authority over their own bodies. While we have seen similar trends rule before, like the barely-there slip dress from the 1990s characterized by its silky material and spaghetti straps, the transparent skirt is now having its fashion moment. The piece is very much in line with the recent lingerie trend that has been presented by labels like Gucci, Dolce & Gabanna, and Etro. The runways have spoken. In 2024, our skirts will be as transparent as we dare!

This trend is actually so popular and revolutionary that the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris is dedicating an entire exhibition to transparency, titled Le pouvoir des matières, which will be on display from February 9 to August 25, 2024.
