SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys dash to victory, girls second at East

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ cross country team took first place and the Bobcat girls were second at the 68th Mike Augustine Cross Country Classic on Thursday at Ewing Park.

The Bobcat boys won their four-team competition with just 21 points, with each of the team’s first six competitors finishing in the top 10. Des Moines Lincoln’s Zach Stoermer won the meet with a time of 17 minutes, 19.4 seconds, and he was chased across the finish line by Marshalltown’s John Moellers (17:20.4), James Johnson (17:27.5), Preston Johnson (17:54.7) and Carter Nunn (18:15.4).

Caleb Rasmussen placed seventh for MHS (18:40.5), while Dale Greene emerged with eighth place (19:05.6).

On the girls’ side, Marshalltown totaled 33 points and trailed Des Moines Lincoln, which totaled 24 points as the only other full team in attendance. Des Moines East was unable to field a complete team.

Marshalltown was led by Anessa Morrison, who took second place with a time of 24:16.8. The champion — Ava Manning of Des Moines Lincoln — clocked in at 23:53.5.

Miller Heitmann captured fourth place for Marshalltown in 24:50.6, Thalia Gallegos was sixth in 25:41.6, and Emerson Eastman claimed ninth in 26:21.6. Aubrie Tejada rounded out the Bobcats’ running roster in 12th place, crossing in 27:20.5.

Cyclone women picked sixth in Big 12 poll

The Iowa State women’s basketball team was picked sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll announced by the conference on Thursday. The Cyclones were picked behind Texas, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma, all in the top-five.

Iowa State hosts Truman State on November 1 for an exhibition contest before opening the regular season against Butler on November 6 in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones travel to Oklahoma State on December 30 for the Big 12 opener.

The 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship takes place March 7-12 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
