What happened: The Lady Horsemen did something they hadn’t done in almost a year — invoke the 10-goal mercy rule. They needed just 60 minutes to finish off the Lady Braves in a District 2-1A/3A match Wednesday at Christian Brothers Athletic Complex. It was a balanced effort, as no player had more than two goals and seven players scored. “We are getting ready for next week when we play [Las Vegas] Robertson and Santa Fe Prep,” Lady Horsemen head coach Alfonso Camarena said. “Our team is looking pretty good. We’re getting better every game.”

Top players: The trio of Jada Lujan, Bella Griego and Sophia Miera each had a pair of goals, while Bella Griego, Charlotte Herman, Iliana Sandoval, Lauren Patten and Clare Velazquez each scored a goal.

What’s next: St. Michael’s (5-5-2, 2-0) travels to Sun Mountain Field on Tuesday to take on Santa Fe Prep with the district lead on the line. SFIS (0-7, 0-2) hosts Las Vegas Robertson on Saturday.

What happened: The toll of the past eight days seemed to keep the Demonettes in a slumber to start their District 5-5A match against the Monarchs at Santa Fe High. A sluggish start to the match was evident, as Santa Fe High head coach Justin Najaka said the team’s passing was just off. Still, the Demonettes led 4-0 at the half before showing significant improvement in the second half. “The ball was touching a lot of feet, especially in the second half,” Najaka said. “We made some small adjustments and had to talk about playing our game.” But the win came at a cost: junior midfielder Laila Carter injured her ankle and was carried off the field.

Top players: Asha Smelser, Elsa Ranney Smith and Lily Earnest each recorded hat tricks to lead the way and Smith dished out three assists.

What’s next: Santa Fe High (10-1-1, 3-0) heads to Capital for a district match Saturday.

Los Lunas 3, Capital 0

What happened: The Lady Jaguars are now 0 for 2 against two of District 5-5A's top three teams as the Lady Tigers came to Jaguar Field. Los Lunas led 1-0 at the half before adding a pair of goals. Capital head coach Santana Orozco said her team had a few scoring opportunities, but the Lady Tigers defense was strong. “It was a super good game,” Orozco wrote in a text message. “Capital did well maintaining Los Lunas.”

What’s next: Capital (6-5, 1-2) steps away from district play with a match at Taos on Thursday.

What happened: The Demons were efficient to start their 5-5A match at the APS Soccer Complex, scoring goals on their first two shots. The downside was they needed 43 more to score the next five goals. Still, that output was more than enough as the defense refused to yield a shot on goal the entire night. “Defense was solid,” Demons head coach Chris Eadie said. “We had great possession.”

Top players: Cy Anderson and Chris Solano each had hat tricks to lead the Demons’ attack. Luis Serrano added a goal to go with his two assists.

What’s next: Santa Fe High (7-5, 3-0) wastes little time to get back on the pitch, playing St. Michael’s at Christian Brothers Athletic Complex on Thursday as the Demons continue a four-matches-in-eight days stretch.
